Build and build

The Car G 5G Plus is an unpleasant smartphone when it comes to design, but that's not a bad thing at all. You’ll get the full screen experience on the front with a 6.7in long display, as well as a camera cut in the top left corner and, although the bezels aren’t as thin as the flagship counterparts, they’re much smaller in price. There’s one mono speaker downstairs - you’ll have to choose the Moto G8 Power if you’re looking for a Moto budget device with stereo settings - as well as a much larger 3.5mm jackphone, and USB-C connectivity as well.

The Moto G 5G Plus is a small piece compared to the likes of the OnePlus Nord, which measures 9mm in size, but the entire plastic body of the smartphone means it is not as heavy as it looks at 207g. Plastic sensors don’t feel as premium as other similarly priced methods that use a combination of plastic, glass and metal, but it does mean they won’t break into a thousand pieces if you (or, let’s be honest, when) stop it.

The G Plus is available in blue and blue on its own, with a sophisticated design of the inside of the back of the case, and an extension to the camera cabins, with the aim of making it stand out. The problem is that, with the popularity of the Realme 6 Pro and its amazing blue light it is also available at a cheaper price, it simply cannot compete in style.

You’ll find an embedded fingerprint scanner inside the smartphone’s right power button, which is ideal when holding your phone with your right hand but hard to find if you’re a southpaw. The fingerprint scanner does its job well, with a few indirect readings of my time with the Moto G 5G Plus, but it’s not the fastest scanner I’ve ever used.

There’s also a dedicated Google Assistant button on the top left of the smartphone, which is very easy to miss and, no doubt, a little aimless. Google Assistant can be customized in many ways on the Moto G 5G Plus, like most modern Android smartphones, and the fact that it can't be repeated means that it doesn't matter if you are not a Google Assistant fan.

Motorola says the Moto G 5G Plus is resistant to splash, and should be able to survive certain rain conditions, but don't go for it and expect it to survive. There’s also NFC, which is a nice surprise given Motorola’s absence of NFC on some Moto Moto phones, allowing you to use Google Pay and other NFC-enabled items.

Let's put it this way: if the Moto G 5G Plus were a male peacock, he probably wouldn't have found a partner. But, fortunately, the Moto G 5G Plus is not a shiny bird, and there is so much more to this device than its appearance.

Details, performance and battery life

Let's talk about specs. The Snapdragon 765 in the heart of the Moto G 5G Plus is similar to the £ 549 / $ 699 Motorola Edge, and there is the same amount of RAM in 4- or 6GB depending on the storage (64- or 128GB) you choose for it. With a £ 250 price difference in the UK, it could make the Moto G 5G Plus a very good price or make the Motorola Edge more expensive - in any case, I'll let you decide.

It may not be the flagship Snapdragon 865 or the new 865 Plus, but I have no real complaints about the performance of the Moto G 5G Plus - and that’s interesting. It rarely hangs when you open apps or stutter when scrolling for heavy apps like Twitter and Facebook.

The only noticeable difference in performance comes when you reach the camera; Unlike more expensive targeting and shooting phones, it takes the Moto G 5G Plus a moment to load the camera preview when you first open the app. That is more common with a smartphone at this price point though.

That good performance also translates into gaming experience. Whether you play Gardenscape or Call of Duty: Mobile, you will not encounter any significant lag, although you may be locked out of the advanced graphics settings in some of the top mobile games.

Part of the reason that the experience sounds so smooth is because of the refreshing 90Hz rating on the rendering from the 6.7in LCD display. It makes a huge difference in all browsing experience, and although it was once a feature of the flagship, it is now available on budget-focused smartphones by 2020.

The disadvantages of the Motorola Moto G 5G

The Motorola Moto G 5G weighs 212 g (7.48 oz), offers only two colors namely Volcanic Gray, Frosted Silver, does not provide water and dust resistance, has no wireless charging, does not provide heat sensor or Barometer, has no Infrared, provides non-removable battery , and does not expose Corning Gorilla glass with screen protection.
